Sanctions will work eventually. The Russian economy will be destroyed and they won't be able to build or even maintain their military. It's just sad that the people will suffer first, like in the days of Stalin.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 03, 2022 12:34 pmUnfortunately I dont think sanctions are going to work, which leaves 2 options:
1. The west sits back and watches Ukraine destoyed and picks up the pieces after. Just hope no other countries are next.
2. We goto war with Russua, which will mean Nuclear weapons. Best predicitions are 40 million dead in the short term over 12 months in the northern hemisphere.
Very bleak, especially I think for Ukraine.

I read this morning, that China may well put an end to this stupidity!Archery1969 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 03, 2022 12:34 pmUnfortunately I dont think sanctions are going to work, which leaves 2 options:

As I read it, China - that is the multi-Billionaire Chinese high-up "Communists" - don't agree with the way that Putin is destabilising things AND making things harder for China. Hopefully, our unlikely ally in the Far East will shortly make things untenable for our 'Vlad!'

Can't we say to China, sort Putin out today by 5.00pm or we will impose the same sanctions on you and any money we owe you is now defunct ?
Just had an epiphany. There was never any chance Nato would walk into Russia and start killing people. No chance at all.
So all this Russian (Pitunesque?) waffle about security and the evil West is pure BS.
But we should be worried about the state of Russian poilitcs. And I think there is some truth in the idea that damaging sanctions could be counter-productive. Not in the short term, but Hitler rose to power partly because of the WW1 reparations that wrecked the German economy.
The point being, hurt an economy and you hurt the population. That makes that population more open to supporting anyone that suggests a solution. And by the time they discover the saviour is a raving megalomaniac its too late for Joe Bloggski to do anything about it.
BTW I'm grumpy. The garage gutter has come down. 1st world problems eh?

Nato countries (joining date)
The 3 countries, probably next on Putins list, are in the Baltics. That will trigger Article 5.
Estonia
Latvia
Lithuainia

Cool, so at least 10 eastern europe countries joined nato after nato promised (verbally, in 1990) not to expand (special remark for greenmark - and not to deploy a nuclear weapons on their territory!) to eastern europe. And you still cannot see why russian state a lil bit worried by the threat from the west.wearthefoxhat wrote: ↑Thu Mar 03, 2022 3:29 pmNato countries (joining date)

And do you know what would solve the problem? - Russia's admission to nato! But nato refused Russia which makes you think - why did this nato thingy start (real reason)?

Can't countenance that the top guys in the world would even consider nuclear war. Surely, 'winning' would be the epitome of a pyrrhic victory.
It would be unbelievably stupid. Ordinary people like each other. Sometimes not. But we get along. Nuclear war would wipe out big sections of humanity, with the loss of their potential contribution to the greater problems we face. Not just MAD but DUMB.
I envy you greenmark, your naivity, you must be living in a wonderful world, slightly feigned, but still wonderful world.greenmark wrote: ↑Thu Mar 03, 2022 4:00 pmCan't countenance that the top guys in the world would even consider nuclear war. Let the manic desire of some organization to expand its "nuclear tentacles" never disturb your wondrous world. I am not kidding here. I want to live too.

That post was my honest opinion. But I accept your different view. No probem at all. Opinions are what humans are good at. The more the merrier.napshnap wrote: ↑Thu Mar 03, 2022 4:09 pmI envy you greenmark, your naivity, you must be living in a wonderful world, slightly feigned, but still wonderful world.greenmark wrote: ↑Thu Mar 03, 2022 4:00 pmCan't countenance that the top guys in the world would even consider nuclear war. Looks like Macron has been made to look like a complete muppet by Putin.
"There call today, Putin told him he wants all of Ukraine back"
This will have to end in WW3.
