Sell = back. Buy = lay. Just remember buy low, sell high. Understandable confusion as most people see backing as buying a betting slip. Tbh it's not buying or selling its backing and laying, but people sure do like to sound fancy.

I had the impression that they are laying bets at bookmakers to provide prices and liquidity

Maybe they are, if you've got enough clout you can make deals. It'll be a business to business relationship so the usual regs won't apply.

It's always funny reading about Tony, I think a few of us first encountered him when he was an up and coming poker player. The boy done good.
