No they couldn't, but at least they're not stupid enough to claim they can like the last government.

The Tories created the slogan stop the boats. It's now adopted by far-right thugs, and not one Conservative politician has called it out!
No they couldn't
I absolutely and totally agree with you for once.

But how do you know that ?
Sunak was asked for a definition of "stop the boats". He refused to give one, you haven't either, so I would take the literal meaning, that is, not a single migrant crosses the channel in a boat. I can't see a 30-foot-high wall being built on either side of the channel. Even if they called in the navy to blow them out of the water, a few would still get through.
But how do you know that ?
I'll tell you how .
Because Angelor Rayner, the Labour Deputy Leader, has given the game away

That's got nothing to do with boats. She's not saying a fair share of boats must cross the channel.

I would guess on boats, but she said migrants, not illegal immigrants.

A migrant is an umbrella term which does not have a legal definition under international law'

The number of legal migrants dropped by 117,000 upto July 2024 and the number of applications to work in the care sector dropped by 80%. This is mainly due to the minimum salary requirement of £34,000. But Labour has now lowered that requirement to £29,000 pending a review.

Yes, that was a Tory plan to attempt cut migration

Fuck international law. I know what a migrant is, even if you don't. She didn't say we need a fair share of migrants as defined by international law, so don't try and twist things.

So c40,000 "illlegal" migrations (over last year) v's 1,218,000 migrations which is c3.3% of total...

That is a lot of huffing & puffing over 3.3%...

(above are gov figs)

"Fuck international law" is not twisting anything. I was just saying I'm talking in English, not legal terminology. And so was Angela Rayner. You seem to have very limited understanding.

Isn't immigration about how many people we need? We haven't been training our own people. The Labour Manifesto addresses this.
I saw this trend in IT. The argument seems to be "We don't have the skills. OK, Go out and buy them", often at consultancy rates. The alternative is to invest in the people you have but I have to tell you I never ever saw my bosses invest in us rather than bring in contractors on three times what we were earning.
Why? In one case my manager told me that the backhander from agencies was a nice little earner.
Quick, expensive fix.

I think there is a big difference between legal immigration (People we need) and illegal immigration. The former you can control, the latter is more difficult. Which a number of countries are struggling with. The discussion is what do you do with them and to some extent why should they be queue jumping for accomadation, that maynot be true but there is a perception they are in certain areas.

I wouldn't go as far as that, sea and sharks are my worst nightmare ( Jaws ) as well as drowning'.

How they can even contemplate crossing the channel in a dinghy beggars belief

I was swimming in the sea off Key West a few years ago with my two young children surrounded by jelly fish, scary
