No sarcasm. I do this occasionally when I think there is a significant short term risk to the stock markets. It's usually fairly easy to swap your investment pots around with a couple of days' notice, and moving it into cash for a very short period is a low risk/high reward strategy. I boosted my pot by 30% during the Covid crisis by selling then buying the drop.jimibt wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 7:59 pmcan't tell if you're being sarcy or not (i.e. heeding advice from a rumour mill)...jamesedwards wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 7:36 pmOh my God.ForFolksSake wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 5:10 pm
Looks like the Chancellor Reeves is considering changes to the government's so-called fiscal rules governing how much it can spend which will trap the UK in 'financial black hole'.![]()

that said, heard from a friend (who has a friend of a 3rd cousin [twice removed] in a very high government position) that child benefit was getting scrapped. have removed my penis from all activity until after the budget. conversely, will have to rely on my index for a bit.. lol
Child benefit eligibility currently unfair - should be based on household income.
There's no way it is getting scrapped - if anything more people will be eligible for the benefit by basing it on £120k household income.
You'll probably be able to 'knock' another 'couple' out and still be no worse off

Why not make all benefits simple and employ less people to manage them? As Tony Blah said HMRC basically knows the income of all UK taxpayers so why not get their computer to ID the qualifiers and make the payments by adding a few extra questions to the tax return. Those that are not UK taxpayers stay in the current system.ForFolksSake wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 8:49 pmChild benefit eligibility currently unfair - should be based on household income.

It seems that Labour are no different to the Tories regarding sleeze.
Turns out the new Home Secretary, after getting free tickets, put pressure on the Met Police to give Taylor Swift the blue light party. That breaks protocol as blue light is for Senior ministers, the PM and members of the Royal family.
Labour are digging a hole, Reform UK will be loving this...

On my God, seriously who gives a shit? The snouts in the trough media frenzy is going too far. Are we ever again going to let our democratically elected representatives alone to concentrate on running the country?Archery1969 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 8:37 pmIt seems that Labour are no different to the Tories regarding sleeze.

I couldn't care less about Boris' wallpaper, or who paid for Starmer's glasses, and I certainly couldn't give two hoots whether Yvette Cooper asked for police to escort Taylor Swift to a concert. Greedy scavenging scum journalists sensationalising nonsense for clicks and personal political gain.

I very much doubt any of it makes any measurable difference to any of the above.ForFolksSake wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 11:22 pmPensioners, anybody who has a mortgage, anybody who is renting because they can't afford a mortgage, homeless, anybody who has to wait months and months for an operation on the NHSjamesedwards wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 10:54 pmOn my God, seriously who gives a shit?Archery1969 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 8:37 pmIt seems that Labour are no different to the Tories regarding sleeze.

Labour's freebies is what is winding everybody up and the Conservatives are no different - which is the point the OP was makingjamesedwards wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2024 11:45 amIt's the media winding everybody up. With respect the OP's original point was a rant against anything Labour said after coming into power after looking at the books and realising what a s**t show they'd taken on.ForFolksSake wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2024 12:55 pmLabour's freebies is what is winding everybody up and the Conservatives are no different - which is the point the OP was makingjamesedwards wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2024 11:45 amIt's the media winding everybody up. MP's taking freebies? Who'd have thunk it!!! Ministers taking freebies? Er ....kerching! Always has been and always will be.
Don't obsess on this issue it is missing the point. What do they do is important? I don't care if Kier is gifted suits, glasses, football hospitality (although envy is strong on that one).
Thus far they have p**sed me off with the winter fuel payment (better ways to do that).
Now they are propsing HS2 back to Euston. Jeez HS2 was a Labour idea and it's just a f**king disaster. It's embarassing.
meanwhile, i still have to make the odd 96 mile detour (literally this is on my doorstep): https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c05g0q0z7d6ogreenmark wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2024 1:34 pmWith respect the OP's original point was a rant against anything Labour said after coming into power after looking at the books and realising what a s**t show they'd taken on.ForFolksSake wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2024 12:55 pmLabour's freebies is what is winding everybody up and the Conservatives are no different - which is the point the OP was makingjamesedwards wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2024 11:45 am

Do you think this problem can be sorted in 3 months? The Tories had 14 years and pledged several times to deal with it, but failed.ForFolksSake wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2024 4:56 pmKeir Starmer's 'smash gangs' pledge 'in tatters' after 12,900 migrants arrive in 3 monthsgreenmark wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2024 1:34 pmWhat do they do is important?ForFolksSake wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2024 12:55 pm
