As far as I'm concerned employer contributions are as much of a tax on my employment as employee contributions. I've never considered them otherwise.

It's just a stealth income tax increase that Labour hope the proletariat won't understand. And to be fair the majority probably won't.

People will when they start losing their jobs. Plus social media is rife with the blame game already.

Don’t know why Labour are planning for 10 years, they won’t last that long.

Won’t be the Tories next though, Reform UK will capitalise on it over the next 4 years.

Also, if Trump does somehow win, he already stated he will put 30% tariffs on imports from the UK. That will help further increase job loses in the UK.

Unemployment will go through the roof!!!!

Been away for a whole week. Switched everything off except my fridge ... and I still didn't hit my target for free electricity!!!

I'm gonna switch my power off for three hours a day next week and run on battery power. I'll get that flipping free electricity even if it kills me!

My gas is 29p a day unless I run it.
My electric is £1.50.
Buy a windmill or go solar. Should be back in profit in 20 years.

That's the problem, how do you reduce electricity usage when you're barely using it at peak time - just two laptops, TV and a fridge?

I guess my fridge must be using most of the elecky. It's getting darker earlier as well which doesn't help. The food will be alright for three hours. Then, I can switch my washing machine on and bake some biscuits in the oven for free on Sunday.

Utility company's give you free electricity if you move your usage from peak hours and normally have offers on during the year. I'm with EDF and if you save x % of your usage between 4pm and 7pm you get between 4 and 16 free hours of electricity on a Sunday

It's easy to off-set just have your tea after 7, don't shower or use washer machine between them hours, weather has been mild so not had heating on yet. Do all the washing/meal prep etc on a Sunday when it's all free.

Yeah that's great if ... you can have a smart2 meter that connects to the network. I've been told I can have a smart2 meter fitted but it won't do me any good because it will not be able to connect so the advice is to wait until I can be connected (no target given!) and maybe by then the meter technology will have been enhanced.

Plus (and I know millions feel the same) smart meters don't always work. In my case it failed after 3 months. Then, mysteriously, after the govt took over from Bulb, it started working again. Now after Octopus have taken over, the gas is out of sync by at least a day.
In short they are not an aid for you to monitor your energy. They are a method of deleting jobs and so unreliable that if you are concerned about accuracy you still have to check your usage manually. And there is zero point complaining - "we will upload a software update". Made no difference whatsoever.

I can confirm your fridge/freezer is an energy guzzler. But hey it's on 24/7. If it's faulty, however, trust me, its a double guzzler. This is were a working smart meter is really quite useful.

I can confirm your fridge/freezer is an energy guzzler. But hey it's on 24/7. If it's faulty, however, trust me, its a double guzzler. This is were a working smart meter is really quite useful.

It's well over ten years old - in fact, my old landlord didn't want it and let me take it when I moved. I've seen a nice one in Argos, total no frost with water dispenser for just £300, the problem is my freezer is jam-packed with food and I need to train myself to stop getting tempted to buy food when I'm in the supermarket.

My sister's buying habits baffle me. One Xmas shop we did for 4 people she bought 2 baggettes (so prob 1 yard of bread). We already had more than enough bread.
The bacon butties were nice though. The rest got binned.
But, hey she now earns good money. Perhaps being an adventurous consumer is some sort of inidicator.
When I shop with her there is an ongoing battle she selects premium brands. When she's not looking i swap them out for own brand stuff. It drives her nuts.
