An extra £285 in University tuition fees, or nearly £900 over the course of the average three-year degree, which will balloon when the astronomical rates of interest are added on, will be paid from next September.

University should be free

Again I agree with you. If you have the academic aptitude to get into Uni. You should be supported. People have avoided Uni and headed for apprenticeships.
My understanding is a Uni student will be loaded with debt (unless they have wealthy parents).
An apprentice will be funded through their vocational education.
The choice is obvious IMO do you want the next generation to be more, or less, educated?
Do you believe in education as a concept at all?

I do. Ferociously. Without education we are completely fucked.

plus the tram system in edinburgh. years of chaos. Now I know I can rock up at Waverly train station. A short walk and every 7 minutes a tram will waft me to Newhaven or Edinburgh airport. It will quite likely be rammed. The alternative is a bus (or several) that doesn't turn up. Even got on a bus after a 40 minute wait and we were overtaken by the same service.
The tram has cost huge amounts. But I wouldn't even consider taking a bus now.

I find the strange thing is the Scottish Gov only fund Universities c3k per annum for every Scottish student and unis are expected to make up an difference in costs from foreign students (if indeed there is a deficit)..

So how come in the rest of the UK Universities say they can't get by on over 9K for every student...

Looks like its much cheaper overall to have "free" university education!

Probably because Universities south of the border have higher running costs due to lecturers salary’s, given housing costs etc.

Either that or Universities south are lying and making huge profits, which doesn’t seem likely given their published income/expenditure reports.

Just looked it up.

Apparently when fees were introduced (and just about every uni immediately started charging max possible), they went on big expansion plans on basis fees would continue to rise and now many have unmanageable levels of debt...

Yeah. Universities have a weird structure. There all registered charities with no shareholders. But are not deemed part of the public sector nor fully the private sector. They get government funding per student but can charge what they like for foreign students. What they do with excess income is down to them. Like you said, expanding. But without budgeting properly for the future means they can easily get into debt.

It’s a really weird business model and obviously open to abuse at multiple points.

Does make me think some are expanding because that’s a potentially tax right off. Even though charities don’t pay tax, I think universities are treated differently and they do, hence investing in expansion etc.

More I read about it the more I don’t fully understand the pricing structures.

Midgies are seasonal and restricted to certain areas. Trees and moist areas.
I dunno how you avoid that. But they are disproprtionatley irritating if you are unfortunate to be in a location they like.
Tiny gits!!!!
Scottish weather is well known. Get caught out and it's you''re own fault.
Personally I love Scotland. It's ridiculous for me that we should consider Scottish independence. It would replicate the costs of Brexit but I feel hugely guilty as an Englishman that we have failed Scotland to the extent that Scots think independence is a good idea.
