Proportional representation is probably the worst type of electoral system as you end up with some form of grouping system with a pool of candidates and a percentage getting elected via some formulae or party decision over who gets in. With the current system it maintains the concept that you are voting for an individual and your MP answers to that constituency.

What potentially would be better would be a single (transferrable) vote where you put 1st, 2nd and third choices. That way whoever gets elected would have at least the support of 50% of the electorate. However I strongly suspect the government will increase the deposit by the next general election which will likely filter out the minor parties that tend to lose their deposit.
Reform UK will get more than 50% of the vote at the next election - make Britain Great again 🇬🇧

So you (and Jim) don't believe in a government that represents the people! Good to know. And since when had my MP answered to our community, she's more interested in summer fete photo ops.

As for increased deposits I could find argument either way but would be pleased to see Reform would lose few.

Wow, 1200 illegal immigrants in one day ... I fear to think how many it would have been if we hadn't smashed the gangs!

Well he is right and it is clearly so ... the will of the people is a resounding NO but the Government seek to place the rights of law breaking illegal immigrants above that of the people.

And we had another example of the utter hypocrisy of this Government yesterday. Labour MPs scream and shout against people who 'game the rules' to save tax but not when it's one of their own ... even if it's a Deputy PM. Apparently it's OK for the second most senior MP in the country to manipulate within the rules but not others. Let me be clear, she has not broken any rules and I actually applaud her for making such arrangements, it was my job for part of my career to advise people on such moves ... what I against is don't criticise others for doing what you are doing yourself.

Really need some perspective:

Still struggle to see why all this outrage over a relatively small number of "illegals" (of which the majority get allowed in anyway when asylum claim processed..

Would it not be much simpler to set up a centre to process them in France?

That would:

- undermine the gangs business model
- save life's
- save money
- no excuse to use a boat, so can be shipped right back for due processing in France

So if only a small number of a crime are committed it's OK to not bother to police it then?

And processing them in France will not work. If allowed to cross to the UK they will but if refused they will just go to the beaches and jump on a boat! It's one of those solutions that has not been thought through in practice.

Only thing that would work is putting rolls of barbed wire all the way along the French coastline bordering the English channel

If the left want them in our country it must be mandatory for them to house them in their own homes
If the left want them in they must pay additional tax fees to support them

oh wait the left have now gone into sleep mode... :P

I didn't say that as well you know )

I would rather the gov focused more on "illegal" drugs & real criminals.

And by a strange co-incidence (talking about criminals) the majority (60%) of those arrested recently protesting about "migration" had domestic abuse convictions and a significant number had in their possession drugs or were high on...

Would be up for deporting that lot to St Helena for some re-education.

But to cut a long story short, I don't have a solution but Farage & the Daily Mail certainly don't have one either !

Peace be with you...

Let's give priority to the illegal Van dwellers over the illegal immigrants and put them up in hotels as well while we are at it

There is a UK maritime law that exists, that any unauthorised boat entering UK waters, can be intercepted and returned to the nearest safe harbour, (push back- France) However, the UK tried exploring “pushback” tactics in 2021–22, but legal advice was that it risked breaching both international maritime law and human rights obligations.

Reform have touted they would "rip up" human rights laws, which may indicate the above might be on their to-do list.

Processing centres, with a bi-lateral agreement with UK and France, would work too. This would likely get France to wake up and block the routes that the criminal gangs currently exploit. As soon as the other countries realise there is a push-back policy in place, they won't want their security put at risk, so will take the situation a little more seriously than they are at the moment.
