Personally I wouldn't recommend starting out now with much expectation, treat it as a hobby and see where it takes you. I don't like to be negative but I've been trading since 2007 and have had to evolve year and year and whilst returns have remained high I am expecting quite a drop off in the foreseeable future. There was a time when I would trade Tennis, F1, Snooker, Rugby Union+League, Golf, NBA, NFL, Darts and other stuff like Eurovision very profitably, since around Covid time inplay liquidity (or should i say non-smart) liquidity has gone off a cliff. Now i'm 95% Cricket which has been growing and there's plenty of liquidity for a position taker but other strategies have been squeezed

This seems to indicate the encroachment from Betfair shows no sign of abating.

Perhaps laws (or the gambling companies' interpretation of them ) continue to be tightened.

This from an outside forum I follow :

What I am about to write in this thread may SHOCK you it certainly has shocked me. You will know that no one has championed exchanges and Betfair more than me so this does not come easy.....
At the start of 2026 I upped my stakes after a year of low stakes mainly due to the pressure of my brothers cancer diagnosis and
my Mothers death earlier. I felt I wanted a break from high stake pressure during this period.....
I also had some new methods kicking in for 2026 and was aware that as always things may start well or poorly but if I may policy of low deposit level in Betfair meant topping up that would be no problem as my betting bank is sensibly kept outside Betfair …
Sods law meant the first 2 weeks were poor losing -20% on turnover but topping the account I ran into a cap on monthly deposits that I was unaware of (I have never hit it before). Trying to raise the limit caused an avalanche of intrusive questioning from Betfair ……
Some of which is going to shock you. Not only did they request the usual bank account snapshots but they also wanted full details of my bet strategies. They also wanted the address's of all my rental properties and then the final horror was they rung me up to discuss my Mothers death and my brothers cancer because they stated they needed to assess my mental state

Never, ever, disclose illness or stress to Betfair. Even the BHA chair had his Betfair account suspended because he quipped on Live Chat about his cancer.

The chat takes about 2 hours, I withdrew earlier in the month and deposited some of it back later on (I have net deposit limit of £100) and its very intrusive. They ask you about everything to do with your betting, if you're in loss or break even then you're fucked in all honesty so there's no wonder why liquidity is dwindling so fast.

I don't even blame Betfair, if it got out that they let a man with cancer bet his life savings, I don't think it'd look good and they'd be fined loads.

Yet someone with lung cancer can kill themselves smoking, no questions asked.
