I think it plays neatly into that narrative that you ask AI to do something simple, such as make the world a better place, and it decides that the best way to do that is to eliminate all humans.

It's probably right on that ... name any other species that has done any harm to the planet, let alone more harm!

There are only 2 ways to save the planet for continued human habitation. One is for all 195 countries to agree a plan of action. Really! And the 195 doesn't count the factions within those countries ... good luck with that!

The other is for WW3 to result in one all conquering group to gain total world domination with 100% agreement within themselves. And they would have to do that without using nuclear weapons so as to ensure the planet remains habitable. Again, good luck.

Fair point Shaun but it still requires the massive extermination of the majority of mankind (should that have been personkind?) and for the survivors to agree a way forward. I don't see a way forward until all those remaining on the planet agree and agree soon.

Well...it might take a few million years or whatever...but that's shouldn't bother people that don't exist... even if we nuke the whole planet....odd's are it would 'recover' on a long enough scale....until the inevitable happens anyway...

Seems to me nature has a way of eradicating 'pests' when the population grows lop sided... i.e. humans will likely reduce in population at some point, and other species will regrow and diverge into other species over a long enough time scale....nature or whatever the laws of the universe seems to me to force an equilibrium...

All species seem to want to dominate...but that's part of the equilibrium...when we blow ourselves up...the donkeys, monkeys, cats and dogs, will endeavour to fill the gap...

Quite right, I was selfishly looking at the environment from a human standpoint. In fact the environment never has to recover, it's whatever it is ... a changed environment. And species either cope with the change or not.

That's the problem with the language, the climate isn't changing to a new normal state that species will adapt to, it's climate collapse that renders life as we know it to be unsustainable.

Adaptation requires thousands of years; collapse occurs in decades. When foundational species (like plankton or pollinators) die, the entire food chain collapses instantly. And life cannot adapt behaviorally or genetically to heat that exceeds basic biological cooling limits.
