It's probably right on that ... name any other species that has done any harm to the planet, let alone more harm!

There are only 2 ways to save the planet for continued human habitation. One is for all 195 countries to agree a plan of action. Really! And the 195 doesn't count the factions within those countries ... good luck with that!
The other is for WW3 to result in one all conquering group to gain total world domination with 100% agreement within themselves. And they would have to do that without using nuclear weapons so as to ensure the planet remains habitable. Again, good luck.
The current approach of let's talk about it and reach an agreement we will all ignore will result in the environment becoming so damaged that it cannot recover.
Some will say "that's a bit extreme". Yes, maybe but realistically what's the alternative.

Fair point Shaun but it still requires the massive extermination of the majority of mankind (should that have been personkind?) and for the survivors to agree a way forward. I don't see a way forward until all those remaining on the planet agree and agree soon.ShaunWhite wrote: ↑Thu Jul 23, 2026 7:53 pmCovid Profirlandsfarm wrote: ↑Thu Jul 23, 2026 5:36 pmSome will say "that's a bit extreme". We'll use the same approach we've always used....fix it up when it starts impacting ME...until then someone else's problem.firlandsfarm wrote: ↑Thu Jul 23, 2026 5:36 pmThe current approach of let's talk about it and reach an agreement we will all ignore will result in the environment becoming so damaged that it cannot recover.
IMO The environment will recover from whatever we do to it..... All we need is 2 human's to survive. As long as they are not LGBTQ+ ....or.... of the current generation

Well...it might take a few million years or whatever...but that's shouldn't bother people that don't exist... even if we nuke the whole planet....odd's are it would 'recover' on a long enough scale....until the inevitable happens anyway...ForFolksSake wrote: ↑Fri Jul 24, 2026 9:27 am... do you mean like this ... destroyed ... never coming back in your lifetime

Seems to me nature has a way of eradicating 'pests' when the population grows lop sided... i.e. humans will likely reduce in population at some point, and other species will regrow and diverge into other species over a long enough time scale....nature or whatever the laws of the universe seems to me to force an equilibrium...
All species seem to want to dominate...but that's part of the equilibrium...when we blow ourselves up...the donkeys, monkeys, cats and dogs, will endeavour to fill the gap...

Quite right, I was selfishly looking at the environment from a human standpoint. In fact the environment never has to recover, it's whatever it is ... a changed environment. And species either cope with the change or not.Big Bad Barney wrote: ↑Fri Jul 24, 2026 12:43 amIMO The environment will recover from whatever we do to it..... All we need is 2 human's to survive. That's the problem with the language, the climate isn't changing to a new normal state that species will adapt to, it's climate collapse that renders life as we know it to be unsustainable.firlandsfarm wrote: ↑Fri Jul 31, 2026 10:42 amIn fact the environment never has to recover, it's whatever it is ... a changed environment. Adaptation requires thousands of years; collapse occurs in decades. When foundational species (like plankton or pollinators) die, the entire food chain collapses instantly. And life cannot adapt behaviorally or genetically to heat that exceeds basic biological cooling limits.
Each of these models is getting better and better.

I watched a program about this, as yet AI hasn't yet had any original thinking, but it's strength is collating the vast amount of papers and recognising connections in different fields that specialists in one or the other hadn't been aware of, especially where terminology or notation wasn't normalised. It's essentially spring cleaning all the junk that's accumulated in mankind's cupboards and pairing up the odd socks and finding the missing chargers for tech that's otherwise going to the skip. But as yet nothing you'd say was creating new knowledge.Euler wrote: ↑Sat Aug 01, 2026 2:33 pmEach of these models is getting better and better.

That's right, you can see it clearly. In the fields I specialise in, you can see it reproducing existing content. It finds it impossible to create something original, even if you try and correct it.
The further we go along this path, we'll actually reach the point where it probably can start doing stuff in an original form. I guess that's when we reach AGI.
