Some of you on here will know I have had my fair share of illness and injury of late. Thankfully I am starting to get closer to normal, although some will say I have never been normal. :o

On Monday I was out and about and to avoid the rain I went into a William Hill shop. I had studied the opening Maiden Hurdle at Wetherby and had laid the favourite Wayward Glance win and place. I love opposing flat bred horses that have never jumped a hurdle in public especially ones that are unlikely to be fully wound up and also unlikely to see out the trip on what I believed to be unsuitable ground.

I arrived about 5 minutes before the race and saw the usual mugs writing out their £5 £10 and £20 win Fav tickets. One guy rushed in and had £50 win on it  I struck up a conversation with one guy and mentioned my concern about the fav. I should've said nothing because he sarcastically turned to the guys in the shop and announced that I was stupid enough to oppose the favourite - thanks for that I thought! Then to my surprise they didn't show the race - WTF??

I asked the girl behind the counter why the race wasn't being shown and she said "we're not bothering because most of them want to watch the dogs and the F1" I had to think about that - F1? I turned to the large screen as the next Virtual F1 race was preparing to start and watched in disbelief as multiple mugs ran to the counter to place their bets      I thought perhaps I had been drugged or was still asleep but no, this was really happening. They then started to cheer home their car number whilst I looked for a chair to sit on before the shock caused me to fall over.

There was then a lot of cussing and swearing as they all screwed up their betting slips.

I did have the last    though when the result from Wetherby was posted - favourite nowhere at an SP of 2/1!!

They all told me I was lucky, etc etc and I just smiled inwardly and left the shop. I sent a text to a good friend about what I had seen and the reply summed it up "MADNESS!"

I can believe it JG. 20 years back (before the days of virtual racing), I worked in Ladbrokes betting shops. Needless to say, I met some absolute nutters

We had a regular customer who loved the Greyhounds. He never studied form, he just waited to see which dog had a crap before the race started. He was convinced they'd run faster due to being lighter. I remember one day where he backed the dog that just had a dump, but was alarmed when he noticed the same dog having another one. He rushed to the counter wanting his money back, because he was convinced the dog was ill

I was a mug punter when I started out but thankfully it didn't take me long to realise and accept it. Let's face it, how hard can it be? The end of the day comes and you have lost....again and again and again!

One of the mugs summed it up yesterday when he turned to a mug arriving at the shop and asked "How's your luck?". I knew the reply before the guy had opened his mouth "Rubbish as usual"

Luck doesn't come into it when you think about it.

This is the absolute best way to learn about how markets work. Which for me is the biggest edge you can have as a trader.

I have said this many times to new traders asking advice.
Just spend an afternoon in any bookies, it will teach you most of what you need to know.

great post JG

I could write a book about the subject because I used to frequent the bookies with my Grandfather. Sadly he was the biggest mug of the lot so perhaps that is why I never went the same way for too long.

and trying to explaine that it's the long term that matters not a one off bet is like selling snow to the eskimos :D .

Me too Freddy but as you said, it is all about the long term results.

I once went into a bookies to have a large bet on a horse I had a share in. I had to plead with them to take the bet as it was quite lumpy. That attracted some great looks from the mugs in the shop. I took my seat as the race started and my horse was brought down at the first!! Doh!
