Hi all, a friend on mine have forwarded this e-mail to me this morning. He gave me permission to post it here.

When there is a Stewards Inquiry we do not keep the market open. The in-play markets are suspended at the end of the race as normal and we open a separate Stewards Inquiry market for people to bet on. In many cases we will still settle the market based on the first result because generally customers want the market settled and their funds released form exposure. If there is then an amendment to the result we can re-settle the market accordingly. In addition, not every equity affects the winner of the race so we are sometimes happy to settle the win market.

As for why bets were not void in the first 23 seconds (before the race went in play) we will always treat this on a case by case basis. In this case: it was a bumper race and they were still grouped together and going slowly, so our Market Operations Team were happy to turn the race in-play without voiding bets. In other cases however, especially with National Hunt races, we might decide to void bets placed after the off because there are significant changes to the running order or the odds on offer.
