i think that is a fair outcome but i assume that al zarooni did not administer the steroids himself; i assume that would be done by a vet or vets.

if so why dont the vet or vets who administered the steroids to the 15 horse's, also get banned from racing for at least the same length of time or significantly longer, as they should always have the horses welfare as their main priority?

As the trainer he holds the responsibility of the horses (and staff) under his stewardship. The buck stops with him. I agree the vet should bare some responsibility.

The vet may yet end up in the dock. Sometimes the vet comes off worse in these doping cases. Who remembers Nicky Henderson injecting the Queen's horse? He was struck off but I think we all know Mr Henderson is still training despite the fact he actually instructed the vet to inject the banned substance. Makes you think doesn't it!

having read your reply (and link)jg, i am hopeful that the vet/vets will have to take some responsibility.

I have heard that Al Zarooni did this on his own. Allegedly he injected the horses; there was no vet at all! I am not saying this is 100% but this is what I've heard from many friends who work in racing.

Some trainers are also trained in equine medicine, Mark Johnston (one of my favourite and most respected trainers) is also a vet if memory serves me correctly.

i can only hope only the guilty pay a price.
seems unbelievable to me that someone of his experience etc, does not know the rules. brings into question the integrity of the sport at the highest level, and quite rightly he is effectively finished in racing, and hopefully that will help restore integrity.
