What a thoroughly dis-honest Messi?

Football, Soccer - whatever you call it. It is the beautiful game.

You're a joker, Jimmy Greaves was better than Messi...

Same type of player, but with a better strike rate...and he was honest as well.

'Better strike rate'.

OK, let's see what the stats say.

Jimmy Greaves scored 357 league goals in 517 appearances - http://www.soccerbase.com/players/playe ... er_id=3056

Lionel Messi has scored 215 league goals in 209 appearances - http://www.soccerbase.com/players/playe ... r_id=39850

Sorry, but your belief simply isn't supported by the evidence.

Now you're shifting the goalposts by adding another criterion (having realized that you were wrong about the overall strike rate!). :)

But on the topic of international goals, Messi has managed 16 goals in 15 games so far in since the start of 2012, which isn't bad going. And let's face it - he's up against a tougher class of opponent than Greaves was. It's like comparing Usian Bolt with whoever was the world 100m champion in the 1960s.

That's rubbish for starters. He's playing against muppets.

The last season in Chelsea youth team Jimmy Greaves scored on average 3 goals per game...against muppets yes, but now we're comparing like with like.

Last year, he put a hat trick away against Brazil and scored two against Uruguay. I think it's fair to say that they are stronger teams than any faced by Greaves in his Chelsea youth days!

And what is indisputable is that Messi's league goals were scored against much stronger opponents than Greaves' league goals. Not a single world athletics record from the 1960s is still standing (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wo ... _athletics). What makes you think that football has been immune from this improvement of sporting standards since the era of Greaves?

What you're doing is a bit like saying that John Pullman is an all-time great snooker player because he won the world championship for so many years running in the 1960s, when the fact is that he would be destroyed by anyone in the world top 10 today. Similarly, a 25 year old John McEnroe would be destroyed by any of today's top tennis players, great as he was by the standards of his day.

Obviously, Neymar is the best currently. Highest skill level and scores truly great goals...

Obviously indeed... :)

The same can be said for a number of players, including Messi, Ronaldo, Van Persie, Suarez, Chicarito and Gareth Bale, to name just a few.

Also, we don't know yet how he'll fare in European football.

Suarez and van Persie are top class. Messi, Ronaldo and Bale are over hyped. Chicarito, well barely average.

Chicarito's goals per minute is the best in the Premiership.

Not bad for someone who's barely average! ;)

Yeah, but he's only a bit player - he only comes on when the other team are tired, here is the real list of top scorers.

Notice Suarez and van Persie are the top two....
