Totally agree that as a whole, PL transfers are overpriced, but there is a interesting trend developing this season. In my opinion, the clubs outside 14/15's top 4 are the winners of 15/16 transfer market, finding value abroad, especially in France, for decent fees.
I'm talking about players like: Max Gradel, Jordan Amavi, Yohan Cabaye, Gokhan Inler, Georginio Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Florian Thauvin, Xherdan Shaqiri, Yann M'Vila, Andre Ayew, Heung-Min Son, Salomon Rondon or Dimitri Payet.
My point is not that those players could play in a top 4 side, although a case could be made for some of them, but that the value is more often than not in buying abroad during July or early August. Otherwise you may end up paying €80M for Anthony Martial, whose pedigree in Ligue 1 is way below Gradel, Payet or Ayew. Of course, he is 19 years old and his potential is higher than the aforementioned names. But, nonetheless, Martial business has a huge downside to a limited upside. For that price to be fair he'll have to be one of EPL best players which I honestly doubt.

I agree there are some bargains to be had. It also shows that all the PL clubs are spending big money. If you dont strengthen you are not going to last in this league. Its just that the wealth is so skewed to the top teams the money becomes ridicolous.
I would like to see an NFL style system where smaller teams can draft talent in, somewhat levels the playing field. Not gonna happen though, theres simply too many people making money the way things are

True, it is skewed towards the bigger teams. Nonetheless, if you compare it to the other main european leagues, I don't think EPL has a huge problem and that's why it remains the most interesting league in the world. Of course, if you don't have money to spend, you develop other types of skills. For instance, in terms of tactical work and knowledge, in my opinion EPL stands way behind other leagues and that's one of the reasons why they can't even dominate Europa League, eventhough they usually have the higher budget teams in that competition.
Thats a good point about the tactical knowledge. I think the big clubs in the EPL are thinking they can spend their way to success every year, its definitiely had a bad effect on bringing players through the youth systems and skill development.Elcapitan10 wrote:True, it is skewed towards the bigger teams. SSN really big it up for deadline day !
Being realistic, the vast majority will never play for the club. Virtually all the players are young though, so they pick players with a potential sell-on valueEuler wrote:Chelsea buy Hector from Reading but stays with Reading on loan. Chelsea have an amazing 32 players out on loan now!

I look at that table and some "tight ship" approaches doesn't seem so bad
Now that Southampton can't suffer from Europa League syndrome and bought a ball-playing CB, I think they have enough for another nice season. Especially when Clasie and Bertrand are back. Also, I have to say Koeman has been very smart market-wise, using his knowledge to buy abroad. The EPL is a really strange place, where Glen Murray and Juanmi both cost £5M. The latter is a very good player, he'll prove it given the chances.

Man city and Man Utd alone have spend 374 million euro, Liverpool 100 million. 3 teams for a total of 474 million euro, almost half billion invested.
With the same budget given to 3 Bundesliga teams or 3 serie A teams and cash availability for future years, they would dominate all european competitions for a decade.
They would probably share some trophys, year in year out, with Real Madrid and Barcelona.
In the last 20 years I dont remember an English club dominating a final. Between 2005 to 2008 was probably the best effort in last 20 years...
The last 4 champions league trophys came in with an extreme luck, 3 of them won on penaltys.
The English clubs were always behind ( eccept 2008 ) and manage to turn things around in a way that people still struggle to believe it happened
Lets see what money will bring this year...good luck
