Apparently, now the new licenses have been granted, if someone wants to cancel them then you have to pay £ billions in compensation. Whoever wins the next election wont have money for much let alone paying compensation.Derek27 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 01, 2023 12:45 pmJust because you think something's a bad idea doesn't mean you have to reverse it once it's implemented. Don't believe everything you read.
I remember getting on a plane to India once, as soon as the plane climbed and leveled out, the seat belt light went out and all the Indian people on the plane were pressing their buzzers. From what I remember, none of them requested Tea or Coffee. Beer, Beer, Beer and more Beer until 20 minutes before landing.
Secret piss heads, the lot of them!!!!!
Sunak is definitely tee-total. The thing about alcohol is that it stays on your breath for hours, you can't hide it when you're PM.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 01, 2023 2:25 pmDon't believe everything you read.

I'm of Indian origin myself. My mum said alcoholism was a lot worse in India when it was illegal back in the sixties or whenever it was, because people would gather in secret and pour it down them. Cashew fenny, made from fermented cashew nuts is the popular spirit down there. It tastes flipping awful from what I remember but my dad loved it.

I would have to be seriously pissed before even trying that.
I pay 80 pence for my cans of beer so they should be going up to 84 pence, but no change to the price of a pint in a pub, that remains at £5. That will help out the pubs.

£5 a pint. Your lucky in Brighton where I am its £7 a pint but I get a £1 discount but £6 is madness. Like you I could walk over the road to Sainsburys and buy 8 cans for that. Have thought about it a few times but dont have the nerve to keep going to the toilet to top my pint up.Derek27 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 01, 2023 3:16 pmI was only a kid when I tried it but I recall it tasting like liquid that's been marinated in used smelly socks!Archery1969 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 01, 2023 3:12 pmFermented cashew nuts.Derek27 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 01, 2023 3:02 pm

Go to a Wetherspoon's pub. Pints are about £3.50, they do a decent breakfast, fish & chips and you can have Christmas dinner any day of the year.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 01, 2023 3:31 pm£5 a pint. I would but banned from the two Wetherspoons in Brighton and one in Hove.Derek27 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 01, 2023 4:00 pmGo to a Wetherspoon's pub. No wonder pubs are closing. Supply and demand theory insists that you cut prices when demand slumps, not raise prices to make up your shortfall in customers.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 01, 2023 3:31 pm£5 a pint. I asked the freeholder about this and he said employee wages, food inflation and electricity costs are making it non viable. He cant do anything about those things. All he can do is raise prices across the board. Also, before Covid, surrounding office blockes were full and takings were £10k per week, now he lucky if he makes £3k per week as people are working from home and the office blocks are now vacant with for rent signs everywhere.greenmark wrote: ↑Tue Aug 01, 2023 4:19 pmNo wonder pubs are closing. Fair point. Pubs need to reinvent themselves. It's a sad reflection on post covid life. Only publicans can change things. It seems the popular venues are where folks can get bladdered and not care how much they pay. But I reckon if a pub offers a reasonably priced, enjoyable experience, it's stll an absolute winner of an idea.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 01, 2023 4:23 pmI asked the freeholder about this and he said employee wages, food inflation and electricity costs are making it non viable. He been offered £800k for the premises by a property developer who will also pay for switching back from commercial to residential and building flats.greenmark wrote: ↑Tue Aug 01, 2023 4:42 pmFair point. I think he going to take that offer. Unfortunately 8 bar and kitchen staff will lose their jobs and another 50 year old pub no more.
Property in Brighton is at a premium so makes sense to me, I guess. Shame but there you go.

I'm totally confused by what's happening. I was reading that wine and spirits will go up but beer will come down (https://www.theguardian.com/business/20 ... ing-duties). Seems logical that if they are taxing alcohol then the tax should be a function of the alcohol content.
