They are absolute arseholes. I'm well used to exchanging letters with my neighbours that have been posted through the wrong letterbox. I've even had a deranged postman who went down the entire street posting letters one house early or late. But if you're gonna break into somebody's house you'd think they'd have the brains to check your door number matches what's on the notice!conduirez wrote: ↑Wed Jan 31, 2024 11:39 amA few years ago I found a couple of bailiffs in my garden, they had come through my gate, they were trying to gain entry to my house.
I asked them what they wanted and to get off my property, they start asking where is Mrs S***l was, she is a neighbour of mine, I asked what address they were supposed to be at which they told me, and I said your at the wrong house and showed them proof. They apologised and left.
I wrote a letter complaining to the court but never heard anything back.
RANT CORNER
you prolly missed a trick (in retrospect). had you let them gain entry and they'd taken items, you could have sued for a crazy number of things (loss of property, distress, reputational damage etc, etc)conduirez wrote: ↑Wed Jan 31, 2024 11:39 amA few years ago I found a couple of bailiffs in my garden, they had come through my gate, they were trying to gain entry to my house.

You can't put a price on the distress of not being able to trade for two weeks - the court wouldn't accept your demands.jimibt wrote: ↑Wed Jan 31, 2024 12:40 pmyou prolly missed a trick (in retrospect). had you let them gain entry and they'd taken items, you could have sued for a crazy number of things (loss of property, distress, reputational damage etc, etc)conduirez wrote: ↑Wed Jan 31, 2024 11:39 amA few years ago I found a couple of bailiffs in my garden, they had come through my gate, they were trying to gain entry to my house.

I don't think all bailiffs are empowered by the courts. Councils or HMRC may be able to authorise them. Personally, I would have gone to the police. An attempted break in should be a crime even for a bailiff if they've got the wrong address.

It was definitely issued by the court in Ipswich, I did not see the debt, but I did see the court order.
I doubt if the police would have acted, as Jimibt said, as soon as I took one of them back through the garden gate to the front door they left straight away apologising, the whole thing only took a minute.
How they got the houses mixed up though I will never not know. They did go to Mrs S***l's house afterwards, gossip around the area was rife for a few days.
